Windows Server 2003

Case Studies - Windows Server 2003

Industry : Real Estate/Property Management/Storage Procurement

Business Challenge:

A property management company came to us in search for IT support due to their expanding business. They were starting their network from scratch and needed us to design and install a secure server-based network. They had a heavy reliance on QuickBooks and site management software, so they needed support for these applications at various locations.

Our Recommendations:

Due the importance of QuickBooks with their daily business tasks, we recommended implementing a more efficient platform. This would allow for future growth, and the ability to easily connect to multiple locations.

What We Did:

  • Upgraded the current network server to Windows Server 2003
  • Configured a reliable backup solution for their server and client database
  • Set up and configured a centrally monitored anti-virus solution using Symantec software.
  • Installed a Remote Agent for Backup Exec.
  • Discussed storage growth and upgraded to 72GB Hot Pluggable drives
  • Implemented a Disaster Recovery back-up plan
  • Installed Windows XP on all eight workstations
  • Set up network applications, network printing and faxing capabilities.

How We Helped:

By implementing a server-based network they are now able to connect directly to a central location from all of their storage sites. Due to the success of this project, they are planning to incorporate three to five new storage locations within the next year.

Industry : Machine Manufacturing

Business Challenge:

The owner of a machine manufacturing company asked if we could implement a secure server solution with improved administrative tools. The idea was to create a simpler way to make network changes and adjustments without wasting too much time.

Our Recommendations:

Since we already installed new Exchange Server 2003 and SQL Server 2000 hardware, we recommended migrating to Windows Server 2003, for enhanced security and group policy features. Group policies would allow the owner to easily set up various administrator-defined rules to protect files throughout the entire network.

What We Did:

  • Upgraded the current network server to Windows Server 2003
  • Migrated the current mail server to Exchange 2003
  • Ran Exchange 2000 mangle fix - (salvaged entire database from previous corruption)
  • Discussed an effective spam solution
  • Configured and installed SonicWall TZ 170 Firewall appliance
  • Installed Symantec Antivirus Enterprise Edition v9.0
  • Implemented a Disaster Recovery back-up plan
  • Installed a Remote Agent for Backup Exec.
  • Discussed storage growth and decided to upgrade the current 36GB drives to 72GB Hot Pluggable drives
  • Upgraded HP Proliant server's Firmware to support new hardware
  • Helped set up Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) for users to access workstations off-site
  • Established an HP Care Pack - 24x7, 4 Hour Response for their HP Proliant server
  • Rebuilt Active Directory (which is the central location for network security and user administration)
  • Showed the owner how to use and implement group policy rules

How We Helped:

We worked directly with the in-house network administrator the entire way through. We were able to teach the administrator how to set up group policies, and streamline the network so one simple change would affect the entire network. This learning experience has taught the administrator how to control and monitor the network without taking up too much valuable time.
